Fat acceptance and where it goes horribly wrong

In the vast cyber-world that is the internet, somebody had a brainwave and decided to set up the Fat Acceptance Movement (or 'FAM') to stop fat-shaming.  The movement quickly snowballed as overweight folks finally found a voice and embraced the end of fat-discrimination.

You know what?  I don't have a problem with that.  Although it's hard to eradicate discrimination because it's hard-wired in everyone in some form or another, genuine cruelty should end.  It's nice to know that these obese men and women don't loathe themselves and I'm all for it.

But here is where it went horribly wrong - they decided to force the view that fat is 'curvy', 'sexy' and 'voluptuous' and being overweight is normal on everyone else.  Slim people, folks at a healthy weight for their frames, men who prefer slim/healthy-weight women are shamed.

They then went a step further to state that being overweight is 'healthy'.  To substantiate this ludicrous statement, they quote and misquote, cite and miscite a number of highly suspect 'medical evidence'.  They also quote articles out of context, which ruins their credibility.

I fully understand that not everyone can reach Victoria's Secret model proportions.  Heck, I can't and I'm ok with it.  I don't have big boobs and I'm ok with it as well.  But I'm sure as heck not gonna shove the idea that 'big boobs are ugly' down men's throats because it sure ain't gonna work.

Shaming men for liking slim/healthy-weight women isn't gonna change their preferences.  Why can't these people just respect others the way they themselves demand to be respected?  Hating slim/healthy-weight people only reveals the underlying reason for fat acceptance - to be viewed as attractive.

It's just sad because once normal folks ('normal' being clinically NOT overweight and NOT obese) realise the real reason the FAM was started, the movement loses all credibility.  When actually, to end cruelty would really have been a good thing.

Signing Off,
